“Consensus Should Take Priority Over Differences” – Intellectuals Submit Policy Recommendations to the Commission
July 4, 2025 – Addis Ababa
The Ethiopian Historians Association and the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) have jointly submitted a set of policy recommendations to the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission to support the ongoing dialogue process.
During the handover ceremony, Chief Commissioner Professor Mesfin Araya emphasized the importance of evidence-based input, stating that one of the key approaches the Commission uses to collect agenda items is through research. He noted that the recommendations submitted by these institutions will serve as valuable contributions to the national dialogue.
The research initiative was led by the Life and Peace Institute and brought together over 45 intellectuals from 29 universities across the country. The outcome of the study is a comprehensive policy document organized around eight key recommendations. It addresses the root causes of deep-seated differences within Ethiopian society and offers approaches for building national consensus.
Executives from the Life and Peace Institute, representatives of the Ethiopian Historians Association, IPSS leadership, and members of the National Dialogue Commission participated in the event. The discussion during the handover focused on the critical findings of the research and how they can be integrated into the Commission’s work.
This collaborative effort highlights the role of academia and civil society in contributing to inclusive and solution-oriented national dialogue.
