Statement of Condolence

Commissioner Zegeye Asfaw, a distinguished lawyer, public servant, activist, and philanthropist, passed away on 11 May 2026 at the age of 84.
Born in 1942 in West Shoa, Commissioner Zegeye pursued his legal studies at the former Haile Selassie I University before continuing his education at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he obtained a Master’s Degree in Law.
During the Derg regime, Commissioner Zegeye served his country in several senior government positions, including at the former Ministry of Land Administration, Ministry of Agriculture and Settlement, Ministry of Justice, and Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. He is particularly remembered for his instrumental role in crafting the historic “Land to the Tiller” proclamation, which marked a significant moment in Ethiopia’s modern political and social history.
Beyond public office, Commissioner Zegeye dedicated much of his life to humanitarian and community service. Through the establishment of the local NGO Hunde, he worked tirelessly to improve the lives of vulnerable communities and combat poverty. He also founded a microfinance institution -Busa Gonfa focused on empowering women in rural Ethiopia and expanding economic opportunities at the grassroots level.
Commissioner Zegeye was equally committed to environmental protection and sustainable development. He closely collaborated with farmers and pastoralist communities in advancing environmental conservation initiatives and promoting responsible stewardship of natural resources.
Since February 2021, he had been serving as a Commissioner of the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission. Throughout his tenure, he distinguished himself through his integrity, diligence, humility, and unwavering commitment to the national dialogue process and the service of his country.
The Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives were touched by his service and generosity. His legacy of public service, social commitment, and patriotism will endure for generations to come.
The funeral service will take place on 14 May 2026 at 12:00 PM at Holy Trinity Cathedral, 4 Kilo, Addis Ababa.
