Youth Playing a Key Role in Advancing Ethiopia’s National Dialogue Process
July 1, 2025 – Addis Ababa
The Chief Commissioner of the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission (ENDC), Professor Mesfin Araya, has emphasized the significant contribution of youth to the success of Ethiopia’s ongoing national dialogue process.
Speaking at a panel discussion titled “The Role of Young People in the Success of the National Dialogue in Ethiopia”, Professor Mesfin highlighted the youth’s critical role in sustaining peace and shaping the nation’s future. He acknowledged the involvement of youth councils and various youth-focused structures as essential stakeholders in the dialogue efforts.
“The youth must refrain from actions that incite conflict. Instead, they should engage in constructive dialogue that will benefit both the country and future generations,” the Chief Commissioner noted.
Commissioner Bilen Gebremedhin also addressed the gathering, stating that youth participation has been evident at both group and individual levels. “At the woreda-level constituencies, youth representation has accounted for a minimum of 20%,” she said. “Beyond formal participation, young people have actively contributed as volunteers supporting the Commission’s efforts.”
Commissioner Bilen further revealed that the Commission has launched a dedicated social media platform to create a space for youth groups to engage in dialogue-related conversations and express their perspectives.
Looking ahead, the Commission plans to expand awareness-raising activities among youth groups to deepen their understanding of the principles and significance of national dialogue.
The event featured two panel discussions, where youth representatives and Commissioners engaged with semi-structured questions, offering diverse insights and reflections on the role of young people in fostering inclusive national discourse.
