The Role of Religious Institutions is Vital to Achieving National Consensus – ENDC

The Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission (ENDC) held a consultative meeting with religious elites on June 26, 2025, highlighting the pivotal role of religious institutions in the national dialogue process.

In her opening remarks, Deputy Chief Commissioner Hiroute Gebresillasie emphasized that the deeply rooted tradition of social cohesion fostered by Ethiopia’s religious institutions forms a strong foundation for building national consensus. She affirmed that the Commission engages with religious institutions because of their unique and irreplaceable role in supporting the dialogue process.

Commissioner Ambassador Mohammud Dirir acknowledged the long-standing peaceful and respectful coexistence among Ethiopia’s religious communities, crediting religious institutions for maintaining harmony over the years. He stated that the Commission is making significant efforts to foster national consensus on core national issues and encouraged religious institutions to actively contribute to the success of the ongoing dialogue.

Also addressing the meeting, Commissioner Dr. Ambaye Ogato underlined the critical role of religious institutions in promoting peacebuilding. He urged them to play a proactive role in nurturing a culture of dialogue and mutual understanding across Ethiopian society.

During the meeting, the Commission presented a summary of its key activities over the past three years, along with its strategic plans for the future.
