National Dialogue Process Aims to Rebuild Trust Between Communities and Government: Chief Commissioner
The Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission (ENDC) held a briefing session for membersof the international diplomatic community and representatives of international organizations, presenting progress updates on activities completed so far in the national dialogue process.
Welcoming the guests, Chief Commissioner Professor Mesfin Areaya emphasized that the national dialogue is creating a platform where the voices of all citizens can be heard. He noted that the process is a vital instrument for addressing Ethiopia’s longstanding and complex socio-political challenges by contributing to the renewal of social contracts.
Professor Mesfin reaffirmed that the Commission is mandated to lead the dialogue with impartiality, transparency, and accountability, adding that significant efforts are underway to bring diverse groups closer together for the common good. He underscored that the success of the dialogue will serve as an important asset not only for Ethiopia but also for the region, and called on the international community to continue supporting the initiative.
During the session, Commissioner Dr. Ambaye Ogato delivered a presentation outlining the major milestones achieved and the challenges encountered to date. He highlighted that recent stages of the dialogue have shown a constructive shift—from focusing on divisive issues toward exploring ideas that help build common ground.
Dr. Ambaye also outlined key challenges, including the spread of misinformation on social media, the situation in the Tigray region affecting the rollout of the process, and the decision of some political parties to abstain from participation. He stressed that, as a process aimed at improving the lives of citizens and strengthening the nation, the dialogue deserves consistent support from the international community.
The briefing concluded with a Q&A session, during which representatives of diplomatic missions and international organizations engaged with Commissioners to seek further clarification and share reflections.
