February 18, 2026, Addis Ababa
The House of Peoples’ Representatives has approved, for the second time, an extension of the working mandate of the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission for an additional eight months.
During an urgent session convened on 18 February, the House received a comprehensive briefing on the Commission’s activities and overall progress. Presenting the report, the Chief Commissioner of the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission informed Members of Parliament that the Commission has so far reached constituencies in 1,232 woredas, covering approximately 93 percent of the country.
The Chief Commissioner further noted that considerable efforts have been made to ensure the inclusion of Ethiopians living abroad, emphasizing the importance of diaspora participation in the national dialogue process. He also explained that security and operational challenges in the Tigray region had constrained the Commission’s ability to proceed with activities there during the reporting period.
Outlining the remaining tasks, the Chief Commissioner stated that initiating the dialogue process in the Tigray region and convening the national dialogue conference constitute the Commission’s immediate priorities. He also highlighted key achievements, including sustained engagement with armed groups that have opted for peaceful dialogue, as well as targeted measures to enhance women’s participation. According to the report, the Commission has been working toward ensuring that women account for up to 45 percent of participants in the dialogue process.
Following the presentation, Members of Parliament commended the Commission for its work under challenging circumstances and expressed their commitment to provide continued support. Responding to questions raised during the session, Deputy Chief Commissioner Hiroute Gebresillasie clarified that the time taken to carry out the Commission’s mandate reflects a deliberate and cautious approach aimed at ensuring inclusivity and credibility.
In concluding the session, the Standing Committee for Democratic Affairs proposed an additional eight-month extension to enable the Commission to complete its remaining activities. The proposal was subsequently endorsed and approved by the House.
