The Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission (ENDC) held a press briefing today led by its spokesperson, Mr. Tibebu Taddese, to update the public on recent developments in the Commission’s ongoing work.

Mr. Tibebu emphasized the Commission’s commitment to inclusivity by revealing efforts to involve individuals currently under custody in the national dialogue process. “It is the firm belief of the Commission that engaging people in custody will enrich the process by making it more inclusive and representative,” he stated. He further noted that agenda items raised by incarcerated individuals are likely to reflect unique perspectives and concerns that are vital to the broader national dialogue initiatives.

To realize this goal, members of the Commission have initiated consultations with the Federal Prison Commission to explore implementation strategies. Plans are also underway to hold similar discussions with regional prison commissions across the country.

In addition, Mr. Tibebu shared that the Commission recently held meeting sessions with some political parties, including Enat Party, All Ethiopian Unity Party, and the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party. He reported that representatives of these parties reaffirmed their support for the national dialogue initiative. However, he acknowledged that some of the concerns raised by the parties fall outside the Commission’s mandate and may require the involvement of other national stakeholders.

Underscoring the importance of broad-based participation, the spokesperson also highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance women’s involvement in the dialogue. Recently, the Commission engaged with COCUS—a group of women members of Parliament—to ensure that women’s voices are strongly represented.

On the international front, the Commission has initiated and strengthened key partnerships. Notably, there have been productive discussions with the Norwegian Ambassador to Ethiopia and with representatives from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on areas of mutual interest and cooperation.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to a transparent, participatory, and inclusive national dialogue that incorporates voices from all segments of society.
